I recommend enabling colors to improve the readability of the different branches. To make sure your settings have been updated, and check other settings, just type the command git config -list. If you want to change your username for a specific project, you’ll need to enter this line again, but without the -global. $ git config -global user.email you use the -global option, you only need to do this once. This is an important piece of information, as you’ll need it for all your validations in Git: $ git config -global user.name "John Doe" Start by entering your name and email address. To do this, you’ll need to step into the world of command lines! The first thing to do is configure your identity. This is what we call initializing a Git repository. To work in Git, you’ll need to create a local repository, i.e., a folder where all your changes will be saved. The video below will guide you through the different stages you need to go through. Git Bash is an interface that allows you to run Git from the command line. Whereas on a Mac/Linux terminal, it would be:
For example, if a path is referring to a file on the “C:” drive on Windows, then it will look like this: The only difference you need to look out for if you’re using Git Bash is that in Windows, absolute path names start with the name of the drive before the leading forward slash. Most of the screenshots and screencasts will show a standard terminal rather than Git Bash.
For Mac or Linux users, you can use the system’s terminal program.Īll of the command line instructions in this course apply to both Git Bash and the Mac/Linux terminal.
You only need to install Git Bash if you’re using Windows. During installation, leave all the default options-they’re the ones you need. Run the file that you’ve just downloaded.Ĭlick on Next in each window, then Install. Download the version of Git that corresponds to your operating system: macOS, Windows, or Linux/Unix. If your computer is running a different operating system, then of course you should select and download the relevant version of Git and follow the installation method that works best for your setup.
